The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will hold its 49th annual fiesta on Saturday, September 13th at the LULAC Activity Center, 4224 Ricker Hill Road in Davenport, Iowa. Doors open at 5 p.m., with Mexican food served at 6 p.m., the coronation of fiesta queen at 7 p.m. and dancing from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. According to Henry Vargas, chairman of the fiesta, some of the girls have had family in Davenport for three generations. Queen candidates are as follows:
Jazmine Constantino, daughter of Mike and Hope Constantino.
Why are you running for Fiesta Queen? I had family run in previous years.
Talent/s: I like to play basketball, track, extra school things, Upward Bound
School: Senior at Davenport Central
College plans: Business Management at Northern Illinois or Iowa
Dream: Owning my own business
Heather Eberhart, daughter of Marty and Regina Eberhart.
Why are you running for Fiesta Queen? I just thought it’d be fun.
Talent/s: I don’t know really.
School: Sophomore at Davenport West
College plans: Yes, I want to go to go college.
Dream: Become a nurse
Maraya Gonzalez, daughter of Javier Gonzalez and Tessa Ramirez.
Why are you running for Fiesta Queen? I’m very into my heritage and I like to participate in anything that has to do with what I am. I’m running for the scholarship too, because I really want to go to school.
Talent/s: Very artistic, I’d do anything that has to do with art.
School: Graduated early from West High School
College plans: Get enough money through scholarships and grants to study criminal justice.
Dream: Criminal justice
Jamie Vargas, daughter of Francis Vargas and Janet Christensen.
Why are you running for Fiesta Queen? Get the scholarship to continue my education.
Talent/s: Artist, love to draw, look at artwork, artwork is my fascination.
School: Scott Community College
College plans: St. Ambrose University
Dream: Social worker to give back to the community.
Marisela Villalpando, daughter of Vicente Villapando and Dora Cobarles.
Why are you running for Fiesta Queen? The scholarship money helps with my school.
Talent/s: I love to write, I’m very social and very good at bookkeeping.
School: Journalism major at Black Hawk College
College plans: At least a Bachelor’s degree, go on to my master’s
Dream: Anything in management, as long as I love my job.
