Juanita Terronez has taught just about everything at Ericsson Elementary School in Moline, except for Kindergarten, 3rd and 6th grade. She has been named the new principal at Ericsson, succeeding Pat Alexander. Terronez said she felt fabulous getting the job. Her first pre-student teaching, student teaching, and job were at Ericsson. She also lives in the neighborhood.
She said there were many candidates. Terronez said she was lucky obtaining an interview and was interviewed by a panel asking situational questions. “I felt good, I know the school, know the behavior plan. I knew that’d be a plus for me,” she said. “I don’t have much experience as an administrator but represented our population better. I can help make communication better as an administrator. My parents were immigrants also. I want to give a voice and talk to a voice that’s not very vocal.”
On Pat Alexander’s retirement, Terronez said that Alexander is a principal with heart of gold. “That’s what made her successful. She finds the resources, very aware, and giving,” she said. (Please Read ‘Pat Alexander Retires After 23 Years At Ericsson’ )
Terronez said she would like to continue doing things the way they’re going. She plans no changes right away. “Our staff is very good, hard working. It’s different working with children with poverty. 90 percent are Hispanic and about the same receive free or reduced lunch. The teachers put in the extra effort,” she said.
Terronez also emphasized the importance of education and as an American, the American dream. “As an educator, we push education. That they believe in themselves. We need to work on being part of the American Dream. The American dream is if you work hard, study hard, you can be anything you want to be but you’ve got to educate yourself first. Graduate from high school, college, get a degree. The dreams of our parents are that their kids become self supporting good citizens,” she said.
Ericsson Elementary is having a Family Fiesta, Wednesday, May 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. all are welcome to attend.
