{"id":9193,"date":"2019-06-17T17:30:54","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T22:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.holaamericanews.com\/?p=9193"},"modified":"2019-06-17T22:32:53","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T03:32:53","slug":"carlos-portes-a-tribute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/es\/carlos-portes-a-tribute\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlos Portes: A Tribute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>By JEFF HUTTON <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hola America contributor <\/strong><\/p><div id=\"holaa-2532413409\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles-2\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesperformingarts.org\/whats-on\/series\/summerarts\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"HI-SummerSeries-300&#215;250-SP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HI-SummerSeries-300x250-SP.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Carlos Portes held court, you could guarantee there would be good cigars, refreshing mojitos and challenging conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was a man of ideas, had a vast knowledge of the world around him and was loyal to the many friends who, in turn, became his family. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portes, 68, died June 16, 2019 from heart and kidney failure, a battle he waged valiantly over the past few years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His life was the definition of \u201cThe American Dream,\u201d having made his way from Cuba to Iowa, to New York City and Washington, D.C., to ports around the world, and finally back to his beloved Marshalltown, where he retired and lived out his remaining days. <\/span><\/p><div id=\"holaa-1407782338\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/hhs.iowa.gov\/health-prevention\/diabetes-prevention-management\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Diabetes Spanish 300&#215;250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Diabetes-Spanish-300x250-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portes came to the United States via the Catholic Charities\u2019 program \u201cOperation Pedro Pan\u201d during the Castro takeover of Cuba in the early 1960s. Photo by Tar Macias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portes\u2019 business acumen helped him become one of the premier insurance agents through Allstate, gaining clients and developing multiple new relationships within the Latino population in New York. Jimmy Carter, who asked Portes to be part of his 1976 presidential campaign. Carter\u2019s election to the presidency catapulted Portes into the world of politics and diplomacy after Carter appointed Portes as the U.S. Ambassador for Latin American Affairs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portes traveled throughout the world, establishing diplomatic ties between the United States and numerous countries. His wise counsel was sought by every U.S. president from Carter to Obama, the latter who guided the United States and Cuba to reestablish a diplomatic relationship. <\/span><\/p><div id=\"holaa-1279913688\" class=\"holaa-post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/yourlifeiowa.org\/learn\/drugs\/about-drugs?utm_source=INA%20Spanish&#038;utm_medium=display&#038;utm_campaign=FY2026_SPFRx_FakePills#fake-pills\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"287-10559_SPFRx_FakePil-300&#215;250-px fixed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/287-10559_SPFRx_FakePil-300x250-px-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his office in Marshalltown, the walls are covered with mementos and photographs of Portes alongside American political heavy hitters, presidents, congressmen, politicians of every stripe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while his diplomatic and business skills were well known to those in the White House and Congress, from New York City, Washington, D.C. and Havana, I was fortunate to know the man when he made the return trip to Marshalltown to live out his life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was serving as the editor of the Marshalltown Times-Republican and heard about the \u201cgreat Carlos Portes.\u201d I actually met him during a meeting in the office of state Rep. Mark Smith (D-Marshalltown) at the Iowa Statehouse where we discussed a number of issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging, smart, politically savvy and always charismatic, Portes made a point of seeking me out and there began a friendship that I will cherish for the remainder of my life. He wanted to know my story, my interests, my ambitions and more importantly, he wanted my friendship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew that I needed to know you,\u201d he said when he called me up a few days after we had met in Des Moines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this wasn\u2019t unique. Carlos reached out to those he cared for and made it a point to let them know that this wasn\u2019t about business or politics, rather it was about love and friendship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2016, in one of his last trips to Cuba, I was privileged to travel with Carlos and a small contingent of Iowans as part of a trade mission between Iowa and Cuba. Led by Carlos and former state Sen. Steve Sodders (D-State Center), we trekked throughout Havana, meeting with Cuban government officials. Portes\u2019 diplomatic skills were on full display.
