Former Senator Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) had not declared his intentions to run when the first Univision debate was scheduled. After Thompson said he would accept Univision’s invitation, all the major Republican candidates followed his lead. The debate will be held on Sunday, December 9 at the University of Miami on the leading Spanish language network in the United States, Univision.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Governor Mitt Romney (Mass.), and former Governor Mike Huckabee (Ark.) agreed to participate almost immediately afterwards.

The first debate was to be held in September but was cancelled after Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) were the only ones to commit. Both will participate in this debate as well as Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas). <\/p>

Congressman Tom Tancredo (Col.), a critic of the debate in Spanish has said he would not participate in the debate because of a scheduling conflict. Though, his position on the use of the Spanish language is widely known, Tancredo declined to explain his views for the debate. <\/p>\n

Similar to the Democratic debate, the questions are asked by Univision’s Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas in Spanish, translated into English for the candidates in their earphones, and then their responses translated back to Spanish. <\/p>\n

Although Latinos voters traditionally support Democrats, the 2004 election gave President Bush 44 percent of the Latino vote, due to his efforts in approaching the Latino community and his knowledge of the Spanish language. Republican candidates will have a great opportunity and be seen by more viewers than MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN had in their respective debates. <\/p>\n
