Do you know who the president of the United States was during World War I? How about the president of the United States during the Great Depression? The answer to the first question is Woodrow Wilson and the answer to the second one on Franklin Roosevelt (FDR). <\/p>

Citizenship and Immigration Services released on Thursday, September 27 a new set of questions for the citizenship test. The news test will begin to be used on October 1, 2008 and just like the current test, six of the ten randomly selected questions must be answered correctly. <\/p>\n

On a question asking what did Martin Luther King Jr. do? The answers are endless and include that he worked for equality for all people in the United States and fought for civil rights. As a result, immigration officials did say some questions may have additional answers beyond those provided. The Associated Press reported that about 15-16 questions had to be reworded. The new test cost $6.5 million and was done with six years of research. <\/p>\n

The test covers American Government with the principles of American Democracy, the system of government, and rights and responsibilities. U.S. History is covered through the colonial period and the Independence, the 1800’s, and recent American history and other important historical information. An integrated civics section deals with geography, symbols, and holidays. <\/p>\n

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) was deeply disappointed with the new test. The ICIRR said the new test will impose a much steeper knowledge load on applicants.
“Questions such as ‘what is the rule of law?’ and ‘who was President during World War I?’ are still there. <\/p>

We question how fair it is to require new citizens to answer these questions, which many native-born Americans would find difficult,” said the ICIRR in a statement. <\/p>\n

  <\/p>\n

Some more of the difficult new questions include “Who wrote the Federalist papers?” and “What group had the power to declare war?” The Federalist Papers were written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. The Congress had the power to declare war. <\/p>
