The number of registered Hispanic voters has increased by 50% in the last ten years, making Hispanics the fastest growing electorate. As a result, the largest Spanish language channel in the United States, Univision, originally had debates scheduled for Sunday, September 9 for the Democratic Party and Sunday, September 16 for the Republican Party but
\n the debates were changed to forums. The questions will be asked in English but a simultaneous translation will immediately be heard.
\nA month ago, only two Democratic candidates, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Senator Chris Dodd of Conn. had committed to the event. The two happened to be the only Spanish speaking candidates as well.
\nSenator Hillary Clinton (N.Y.), Senator Barack Obama (Ill.), and former Senator John Edwards (S.C.) are the biggest names that just recently confirmed attendance. They will be joined by Senator Joe Biden (Del.), former Senator Mike Gravel (Ala.), and Congressman Dennis Kucinich (Ohio).
\nThe forum will be ninety minutes each and will be broadcast live on Univision on Sunday, September 9. Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will moderate the debate that will be held at the University of Miami\u2019s BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
\nA forum for the Republican Party will be held a week later on Sunday, September 16 at the same site but only one candidate, Senator John McCain (Ariz.) has confirmed to attend. Additional details on the debate will come in the following weeks.<\/p>\n
