Five candidates are seeking to be the reigning Fiesta Queen for the LULAC Annual Fiesta, which will be held Saturday, September 1st, 2007, at the LULAC Council 10 Center, 4224 Ricker Hill Rd., Davenport, Iowa.\u00a0 This will be the 48th year the fiesta has been held in observance of the Mexican Declaration of Independence from Spain in 1810.
\nProceeds from this celebration go toward\u00a0 <\/p>\n

scholarship grants to high school graduates to further their education goals.\u00a0 To date LULAC Council 10 of Davenport has awarded over $370,000 in scholarships since 1977.<\/p>

The candidates for Fiesta Queen are:<\/p>\n

Monica Herrera<\/strong><\/em> (foto not available)\u2013 Davenport, Iowa, daughter of Angela and Francisco Herrera.\u00a0 Monica, 16, is a junior at Davenport Central High School.\u00a0 She is a member of school choir and is a teacher assistant.<\/p>\n

\"marisela_villalpando\"<\/a><\/strong><\/em> Marisela Villalpando<\/strong><\/em> \u2013Rock Island, daughter of Dora Cabarles and Vicente Villalpando.\u00a0 Marisela, 20, is a freshman at Blackhawk College.\u00a0 She has been a member of the Day of Unity Committee, the March of the Quad Cities, the high school yearbook and high school newspaper.<\/p>\n

\"martha_perales\"<\/a>Martha Perales<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 East Moline, Ill., daughter of Maria and Pedro Madrigal.\u00a0 Martha, 17, is a junior at United Township High School.\u00a0 She is a certified nursing assistant and a volunteer at Aspen and Rosewood Nursing Home.<\/p>

\"bianca_meriah\"<\/a>Bianca R. Mendez (left)<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 Milan, Ill., daughter of Roberto and Teresa Mendez.\u00a0 Bianca, 19, is a Sherrard High School graduate where she was an honor roll student and a cheerleader.\u00a0 She volunteers at Viva Quad Cities, the Child Abuse Council, Red Cross Club, the Illinois Migrant Council, and many other activities.<\/p>\n

Meriah C. Mendez (right)<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 Milan, Ill., daughter of Roberto and Teresa Mendez.\u00a0 Meriah, 16, is a freshman at Sherrard High School.\u00a0 Meriah is a member of SHS peer club, track, soccer, cheerleading, Viva Quad Cities, Bethany for Children and Families, Cinco de Mayo Festival, Floreciente Center and many other activities like her older sister.<\/p>
