{"id":628,"date":"2007-08-01T18:29:22","date_gmt":"2007-08-01T18:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/166.62.41.2\/~holaamericanews\/2007\/08\/01\/book-review-how-the-garcia-girls-lost-their-accents\/"},"modified":"2022-07-17T14:53:56","modified_gmt":"2022-07-17T19:53:56","slug":"book-review-how-the-garcia-girls-lost-their-accents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/es\/book-review-how-the-garcia-girls-lost-their-accents\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=526&amp;Itemid=2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-627\" title=\"garcia_girls\" src=\"http:\/\/166.62.41.2\/~holaamericanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/garcia_girls.jpg\" alt=\"garcia_girls\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a>If you have ever experienced the sorrow of leaving a familiar place but embraced the wonder of going somewhere new, settling down to read How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents (\u201cGarcia Girls\u201d) will be like meeting an old friend with new stories to tell.\u00a0 Garcia Girls is an original novel written with honesty and creativity.\u00a0 The story follows four sisters- Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofia- as they transform from wide-eyed girls into independent ladies.\u00a0 The Garcia girls are down-to-earth and easy to relate to throughout the book.\u00a0 With Alvarez\u2019s ability<br \/>\n<!--more--> to pull you into a story, you will find yourself sighing, sobbing, and laughing with the Garcias as they leave the Dominican Republic and adjust to their new home, the United States.\u00a0 As charming as the four sisters may be, the story would not be complete without Laura and Carlos, the girls\u2019 parents, and Chucha.\u00a0 Laura is a strong character that is essential to the girls\u2019 development, though her daughters often see her as tiresome and old-fashioned.\u00a0 She is comforting when her family is troubled, proud when she brags to others of her daughters, and both brilliant and inspiring when she tries her hand at inventing.\u00a0 Carlos, the girls\u2019 father, is equally impressionable as a character.\u00a0 He supplies many laughs and is reminiscent of many overprotective fathers.\u00a0 The last character that I will mention is Chucha, the Garcia family\u2019s house maid in the Dominican Republic.\u00a0 Chucha is one of the most eccentric people in the book.\u00a0 She sleeps in a purple lined coffin, casts spells on those that anger her, and quarrels with most of the other servants.\u00a0 Her history explains her strange habits, though.\u00a0 Chucha came to the Garcia family when she was young and fleeing from Trujillo, who declared that all black Haitians in the Dominican Republic were to be killed.\u00a0 Laura\u2019s father (Laura was not yet born) took Chucha in as a maid.\u00a0 Often bitter and bickering, she reminds others of how she had changed Laura\u2019s diapers.\u00a0 These are not the only\u00a0 unusual characters in the book.\u00a0 If you read Garcia Girls you will also meet a slick college boy, a shifty maid, and a charming psychologist.\u00a0 You will also follow two Garcia girls as they go insane; discover why Carlos shuns his daughter, Sofia; and watch one of the Garcia girls return to the Dominican Republic.\u00a0 Because of some mature content, I would recommend this book to people who are at least fifteen years old.\u00a0 Garcia Girls has been awarded the PEN\/Oakland Josephine Miles Award and named as a Notable Book of 1991.\u00a0 Julia Alvarez has also received awards for her other novels.\u00a0 If you enjoy How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents you will also like In the Time of the Butterflies, The Other Side, Homecoming, and \u00a1Yo! also by Julia Alvarez.
