Awards Ceremony on June 23, 2007. Sixteen of the students received awards in the amount of $500 but one student, Hannah Cruz was awarded a full ride for one year at the University of Western Illinois. The student with the best<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>overall academic average wins the full ride when they enroll in a university in the state of Ill.\u00a0 Cruz is majoring in sociology and plans to go to law school, she said.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m very lucky,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m very honored and I\u2019ll put the scholarship to good use.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"holaa-3483204533\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles-2\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesperformingarts.org\/whats-on\/series\/summerarts\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"HI-SummerSeries-300&#215;250-SP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HI-SummerSeries-300x250-SP.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p>Jessie Ruiz, the appointed chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education, was the keynote speaker and addressed how vibrant the Latino community is in the state.<br \/>\n\u201cFinancial support is important,\u201d he said. \u201cBut community support and family support are also important.\u201d Ruiz said that one should take the opportunities that have been provided to you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecome educated, become educators and start giving back as well,\u201d he advised.<br \/>\nTCES, Inc. provided free food and refreshments for the families of the scholarship winners at the awards ceremony.\u00a0 Since its founding in 1977 the TCES has awarded over $350,000 in scholarships to over 400 deserving Latino college students.<\/p>\n<p>President of TCES John Espinoza said that the scholarship winners do not just receive the money. The winners have to sign a commitment of twenty hours of volunteer work in fundraisers.
