MARSHALLTOWN \u2014 The Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the Marshalltown Human Rights Commission will hold a Community Hearing on May 22, 2007 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in Dejardin Hall at Iowa Valley Community College, 3702 S. Center Street, Marshalltown. A map is enclosed.
\nPlease save this date for the Community Hearing sponsored by the Marshalltown Human Rights Commission and the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. The Community Hearing is open to the public.
\nSpeakers are urged to sign up on a first come, first served basis and may speak for no more than three minutes. The hearing will conclude promptly at

\nThe public may provide comments in person or in writing. An electronic copy of the text is preferable and may be emailed to jennifer.fath@iowa.gov. A written text is requested of all speakers and may be brought to the hearing or mailed to ICRC, Community Hearings, Grimes State Office Building, 400 E. 14th St., Des Moines, IA 50319. Copies of testimony may be posted to the state website and available to the public.
\nParticipants are invited to address the following questions in their comments:
\n1. What are the civil rights issues and problems in your community and state? What should the local civil rights commission and\/or Iowa Civil Rights Commission do to address these issues or problems?
\n2. How well are the local civil rights commission in your area and the Iowa Civil Rights
\nCommission doing in meeting their investigative (if applicable), regulatory, educational, and advocacy responsibilities?
\n3. What would you like for your local civil rights commission and the Iowa Civil Rights Commission to do to address civil rights issues\/problems, if staff and budget resources permit?
\n4. What are examples of effective ways to fight discrimination in your community? In Iowa?
\nThe comments from the hearings will be compiled with a final report available through the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and will be used by the state and local commissions to develop future plans and budgets.
\nThe purpose of these hearings is to partner with local human rights commissions and stakeholder groups to learn about civil rights issues and problems of Iowans and what the ICRC, local commissions and state and local commissioners can do to address these issues\/problems. The Community Hearings will solicit feedback from Iowans about how the ICRC, local commissions and state and local commissioners are doing and what they should be doing, if staff and budget resources permit. The hearings are intended to identify problems and solutions to discrimination found in the state and will also educate Iowans on the roles and importance of local and state civil rights commissions. Since June, 2005, the state Civil Rights Commission has held joint hearings with local commissions in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Council Bluffs. The Marshalltown Human Rights Commission will hold a regular meeting from 7:30 \u2013 8:30 PM immediately following the Community Hearing at the Iowa Valley Community College District.<\/p>\n
