DES MOINES, Iowa – Although Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the fastest growing racial group in our country, many AAPIs are newer Iowans, with fewer connections to established community groups and elected officials.\u00a0 The goal of the Iowa Department of Human Rights\u2019 Civic Engagement Initiative is to change that by connecting people to their communities and their government.<\/p>\n

To bring civic engagement opportunities to Iowa\u2019s Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the Department is partnering with the Iowa Asian Alliance to host two new events at the Annual Asian Heritage Festival (CelebrAsian) taking place on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28, 2016, in the Western Gateway Park in downtown Des Moines.\u00a0 The first event at the Diplomacy Village will feature Voter RegistrASIAN both days.\u00a0 Festival attendees will be provided with voter registration information and have an opportunity to register to vote.\u00a0\u00a0 The second event is the Soapbox, from 1-5 pm on May 28.\u00a0 Local and state-wide candidates for elected office and other key public leaders will be provided with an opportunity to engage with festival goers to share information about themselves and how to advocate for ideas within government.<\/p>

All candidates for state-wide and central Iowa office were invited to participate in the CelebrAsian Soapbox.\u00a0 For a current line-up of speakers, visit the CelebrAsian Diplomacy Village or the Iowa Department of Human Rights\u2019 website at https:\/\/humanrights.iowa.gov\/news<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 The festival is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
