The United States began celebrating a modified version of this holiday, El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Day of Children/Day of Books), in 1997 after children’s book writer, Pat Mora, suggested adopting the holiday and
broadening it to include children’s literacy and heritage.
Now, you and your family are invited to take part in the festivities on April 28th at the Davenport Library, Fairmount Street Branch, 3000 N. Fairmount St. Davenort, Iowa. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. there will be cake, refreshments, bilingual story telling, crafts, and a Latino exhibit. Los Mocambos, a Hispanic musical group, will play music from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Then at 2:00 p.m. through 3:00 p.m. the Quad Cities Ballet Folkorico will perform traditional Mexican dancing. This will be the only location in the Quad cities hosting an El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros celebration. This is the first time that the Davenport Library has commemorated the holiday and though this year’s focus will be on the Hispanic culture, they hope to expand and recognize other cultures in the future. “We want to recognize children and bring families together to read while introducing them to a culture that might not necessarily be their own,” said Steve Hart, a staff member of the Davenport library in charge of the event. The library will also provide pamphlets explaining the library’s hours, events, and other information in Spanish. The entire library’s staff has been working hard to make the day special and it is sure to be a memorable time, so come out with your family and friends to celebrate El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros at the Davenport Library.
