The State Data Center has released an updated profile of the Latino population living in Iowa, an estimated 173,594 individuals and the state\u2019s largest race or ethnic minority at 5.6 percent of the total population.<\/p>\n

More than half of the total 2014 Latino population (53.8%) lives in a handful of Iowa counties including Polk, Woodbury, Scott, Marshall, Johnson, Muscatine and Pottawattamie.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The number of adult Latinos possessing a high school education is more than 30 percent lower than the state average. In Iowa, more than 92 percent of the total population has a high school education, while only 59.9 percent of Iowa Latinos age 25 and over have at least a high school education.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Latinos also have a higher concentration of preschoolers among the population than any other race or ethnic group in Iowa, with the percentage under age 5 estimated at 12.1 percent.<\/p>\n

Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is recognized as National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating the culture and traditions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America.<\/p>
