Chief Jim Clark of the Ottumwa police department wants to implement a program about adding immigration to the Ottumwa Police Department\u2019s duties. The program is ICE 287 (g), which trains local police so that they can monitor compliance with immigration law.Latinos in the Ottumwa community are concerned with potential mistakes.
\n For example, there have been examples in bigger cities of targeting Hispanics who came in legally and then are deported. Latinos Unidos of Ottumwa also questioned the cost of the program because the city would have to pay $3,500 to cover the cost of training.According to the Ottumwa Courier, Chief Jim Clark was told by Marshalltown\u2019s police chief that \u201c20 different agencies in the state, including the Division of Criminal Investigation and Iowa State Patrol, are interested\u201d in having a local enforcement of immigration law.In order for this program to begin, the city council must approve it, and even if approved, it could take up to a year to implement the program.
