Gov. Terry Branstad orders flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in honor of Officer Kerrie Orozco<\/p>\n

(DES MOINES) – \u00a0Gov. Terry E. Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in honor of Omaha, Neb., Police Officer Kerrie Orozco, 29, who was a Walnut, Iowa, native and resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Orozco was killed in the line of duty Wednesday, May 20, 2015, while attempting to arrest Marcus D. Wheeler on a felony warrant for first-degree assault.<\/span><\/p>

The governor\u2019s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under control of the State of Iowa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Kerrie Orozco,\u201d said Branstad. \u201cAs a former military policeman, I am keenly aware of the dangers law enforcement face every single day on the job. Officer Orozco served with integrity and was a model peace officer. My thoughts and prayers are with her newborn daughter and her entire family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOfficer Kerrie Orozco went to work every day to serve her community and keep her neighbors safe,\u201d said Reynolds. \u201cThis is a devastating loss of a dedicated public servant, community member and new mother. I offer my deepest sympathy to the family of Officer Orozco.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol building and on flag displays in the Capitol complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.<\/span><\/p>
