{"id":2649,"date":"2015-02-09T00:15:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T00:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/166.62.41.2\/~holaamericanews\/2015\/02\/09\/group-discusses-undocumented-students-hurdles-in-attending-college\/"},"modified":"2015-02-09T00:15:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T00:15:00","slug":"group-discusses-undocumented-students-hurdles-in-attending-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/es\/group-discusses-undocumented-students-hurdles-in-attending-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Group discusses undocumented students hurdles in attending college"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kenia Calderon has a dream to make colleges more diverse and help more undocumented students receive an education.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.1599998474121px; line-height: 1.3em;\">Uprising Dreamers awareness was an important topic at the Discuss with Dreamers event Jan. 27.<\/span><\/p><div id=\"holaa-834030110\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles-2\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesperformingarts.org\/whats-on\/series\/summerarts\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"HI-SummerSeries-300&#215;250-SP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HI-SummerSeries-300x250-SP.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p>Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. collaborated with Mexican American Young Achievers Society \u2014 MAYAS \u2014 and A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy \u2014 AMOS \u2014 to bring awareness to undocumented students and the challenges they face to gain admittance into a university.<\/p>\n<p>Inspiration for the event came after the Iowa Freedom Summit.<\/p>\n<p>Calderon and fellow DREAMers protested at the Iowa Freedom Summit, a gathering of possible Republican presidential candidates, held Jan. 24 in Des Moines. She confronted Jim DeMint, a Republican and former U.S. senator for South Carolina from 2005 to 2013, by saying, \u201cSir, I\u2019m a DREAMer, do you care about me?\u201d to which he replied, \u201cI support policies, not people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo Corona, senior in civil engineering and MAYAS president, has parents who are undocumented. He has cousins and knows others who are DREAMers who are going through issues. He said he feels like it\u2019s an important issue for people to understand.\u00a0<\/p><div id=\"holaa-551605596\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/hhs.iowa.gov\/health-prevention\/diabetes-prevention-management\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Diabetes Spanish 300&#215;250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Diabetes-Spanish-300x250-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p>\u201cThe best way for somebody to change and realize it\u2019s wrong and experience it themselves, so bringing the DREAMers here to talk to other people to build those personal relationships, maybe that will spark a light bulb on importance on this issue,\u201d Corona said.<\/p>\n<p>The Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act was a bill Congress passed in 2011. This would grant legal status to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children and attended school here. The term \u201cDREAMer\u201d has been used to describe young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, who have lived and gone to school here.<\/p><div id=\"holaa-3889921102\" class=\"holaa-content\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/progressiowa.org\/2023\/08\/take-action-with-progress-iowa\/?utm_source=news&#038;utm_medium=site&#038;utm_campaign=2026&#038;utm_id=News\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Progress Iowa Spanish 300&#215;250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Progress-Iowa-Spanish-300x250-1.png\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The term DREAMer took its name from the bill in congress. \u00a0However, it has a double meaning about the undocumented youth who have big hopes and dreams for a better future, according to the Anti-Defamation League.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-2647\" src=\"http:\/\/166.62.41.2\/~holaamericanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/AMES%2002.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"558\" align=\"right\" \/>Kenia Calderon, a sophomore in management at Drake University, was one of the DREAMers speakers at the event. She is originally from El Salvador, and was 11 years old when she arrived in the United States. She was one of two DREAMers who graduated from Dowling Catholic High School. It wasn\u2019t until her senior year that she started applying to colleges, but the problem was she didn\u2019t have a social security number.<\/p><div id=\"holaa-3082434500\" class=\"holaa-content_2\" style=\"margin-top: 1px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/yourlifeiowa.org\/locations?&#038;utm_campaign=FY2026_OD2A_MOUD&#038;utm_content=Recovery_is_Possible&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_source=iowa_newspaper_association\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"287-10024_MOUD_300BannersF_es-US_LaRecuperacion_01\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/287-10024_MOUD_300BannersF_es-US_LaRecuperacion_01.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Calderon wanted to go to the University of Northern Iowa, but due to her immigration status, she was denied acceptance and set her sights on Drake. Private schools are easier for undocumented students to attend, she said.<\/p>\n<p>At private universities, undocumented students are often treated like international students and faced with international fees, according to Educators for Fair Consideration.<\/p><div id=\"holaa-3039155944\" class=\"holaa-post-content\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/yourlifeiowa.org\/learn\/drugs\/about-drugs?utm_source=INA%20Spanish&#038;utm_medium=display&#038;utm_campaign=FY2026_SPFRx_FakePills#fake-pills\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"287-10559_SPFRx_FakePil-300&#215;250-px fixed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/287-10559_SPFRx_FakePil-300x250-px-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Calderon is a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.<\/p>\n<p>DACA is an immigration policy that allows certain illegal immigrants who entered before Jan. 15, 2007, as undocumented students to apply to college. President Obama issued an executive order to extend the year to 2010, allowing more undocumented students to apply.<\/p>\n<p>Due to her legal status, Calderon couldn\u2019t apply for FAFSA or any big scholarships without a social security number.<\/p>\n<p>Hope is what motivated her and asking questions is what got her acceptance into Drake. Drake created a special grant for Calderon to be able to attend, making it easier for DREAMers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[There] needs to be a change in public schools to change policies to embrace undocumented students,\u201d Calderon said.<\/p>\n<p>Calderon started a petition at Drake where 10 percent of the student body signed for more undocumented student support on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Maciel-Hernandez, who graduated in May 2014 and a Science Bound recipient, had talked to the director of the program her junior year in high school. Hernandez shared her legal status to the director of Science Bound, who then told her she had three years to graduate from high school to be accepted into the program because that would be the last year the program would accept undocumented students. Sharing her story is what got her a full ride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are living proof that it\u2019s possible,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p>Calderon reminded the audience that these are temporary solutions to a larger, long-term problem.
