One of the most expressive forms of Latin American music is Mariachi. Its origins date back to the early 1840\u2019s from the coastal state of Jalisco in Mexico.<\/p>\n

The sound of Mariachi can also be heard coming from Room 311 at Glenview Middle\u00a0<\/span>School, as the Quad Cities first youth Mariachi Band program has begun.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt is exciting\u201d, says Mr. Clark, the program director and GMS music teacher. \u201cI wanted to recruit for the Mariachi program the same way we start students in our beginning band program. During the last full week of September, we had our Mariachi display night to explain how the program was set up to interested students and parents. The rest is now history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Glenview Mariachi Band program is an after school program. Students have a one-hour group lesson each week on instruments (violins, trumpets and guitars), and a one-hour band rehearsal for the entire ensemble. The first week of lessons began the week of September 29th.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are 25 students from grades 5 \u2013 8 that are currently enrolled in the program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assisting Mr. Clark with the violin and guitar are Miss Janet Torres and Mr. Juan Valtierra. We would like to thank them for their work with our students. \u201cThe students have gotten off to a great start”, said Mr. Clark<\/p>

The Glenview Mariachi Band will host their first presentation this Thursday January 22 at 7 PM at the North Gym at Glenview.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
