{"id":2538,"date":"2014-11-07T00:22:11","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T00:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/166.62.41.2\/~holaamericanews\/2014\/11\/07\/lulac-iowa-celebrates-the-latino-leadership-awards-banquet\/"},"modified":"2014-11-07T00:22:11","modified_gmt":"2014-11-07T00:22:11","slug":"lulac-iowa-celebrates-the-latino-leadership-awards-banquet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/es\/lulac-iowa-celebrates-the-latino-leadership-awards-banquet\/","title":{"rendered":"LULAC Iowa celebrates the Latino leadership awards banquet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DES MOINES- More than 300 individuals came together to celebrate to celebrate the Latino community at the second annual Iowa Latino Leadership Banquet on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Six individuals were honored at the banquet, including a promising young Latina who was awarded a scholarship.<\/span><\/p><div id=\"holaa-1983606536\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles-2\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesperformingarts.org\/whats-on\/series\/summerarts\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"HI-SummerSeries-300&#215;250-SP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HI-SummerSeries-300x250-SP.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p>\u201cThe Latino community once again united to show how strong we have become as a community and as a segment of the Iowa population,\u201d said Joe Enriquez Henry, president of Council 307 and state director of LULAC of Iowa. \u201cOur organization was honored to lead the celebration of the achievements of these individuals who work hard every day on behalf of Latinos and all Iowans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attendees include various members of the Latino community, elected leaders, candidates for state office and national Latino leaders Margaret Moran, the president of National LULAC, and Brent Wilkes, the national executive director.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers highlighted the need for the Latino community to vote and become active members in the political process, both by running for office and ensuring their voices are heard at the polls.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">The following individuals were honored:<\/span><\/strong><\/p><div id=\"holaa-3585173625\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/hhs.iowa.gov\/health-prevention\/diabetes-prevention-management\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Diabetes Spanish 300&#215;250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Diabetes-Spanish-300x250-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">LULAC Builder Award\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sara Monroy Huddleston, president of a new LULAC Council in Storm Lake, Ia. Mackey started the statewide event 14 years ago as a way to celebrate the contributions from the more than 22 Latino countries that are represented in Iowa. She retired after this year\u2019s festival. Tom Harkin, who will retire after serving Iowans for more than 40 years, Harkin has been an advocate for all Iowans and his work has extended to the Latino community, those with special needs and others. Marcano-Kelly, a graduate of the inaugural Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines, who now works for the Iowa Department of Human Services. Marcano-Kelly has been a community organizer with Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, where she advocated on behalf of the Latino community for issues that include wage theft, immigration reform, voter\u2019s rights, driver\u2019s licenses and raising the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Emerging Latino Leadership Scholarship Award \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maria Mayorga, 25, is in her final year at Drake University Law School. She has interned for several Des Moines-area attorneys. Mayorga worked at the Drake Law School Legal Clinic and was the legal assistant for the Immigrant Survivors Advancement Legal Program (ISA), where she helped immigrant women who were victims of domestic abuse receive legal assistance and counseling referrals. Mayorga, a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School, is a single parent of a son, and also provides translation services to her alma mater high school.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-2537\" src=\"http:\/\/166.62.41.2\/~holaamericanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DINNER%2003.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" width=\"300\" height=\"508\" \/>This year, a new award was introduced. The Law Office of Sonia Parras sponsored <strong>the Latino Achievement Award<\/strong>, which was presented to Alba Perez, executive officer of the Office of Latino Affairs for the Iowa Department of Human Rights. Perez was selected as the recipient for the award because of her devotion throughout her entire adult to outreach and involvement of the Latino community, and her inspiration to Latina women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She created the initial Latino Business Association called Alianza; led a 2000 study that examined the Latino community\u2019s contributions to Central Iowa; and helped get Salsa Iowa and Iowa\u2019s Latino Heritage Festival off of the ground.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Perez, a survivor of domestic violence, has publicly spoken about her experiences and testified to help change Iowa law to make a domestic abuse assault conviction carry a mandatory two-day jail sentence.
