Sal emigrated from Mexico with his parents when he was 4 years old, and grew up in Aurora, IL.\u00a0 Although we grew up in different cultures, the values and lessons we learned from our parents are quite the same.\u00a0 Both our fathers were hard working men who worked the same job in the same place for over 30 years.\u00a0 Both of our mothers had the demanding job of running the household and taking care of us and our siblings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Sal and I love to share stories of our experiences growing up and have found many to be the same.\u00a0 Here is one that is the same for both of us.\u00a0 When we were children, if we wanted to go somewhere to play, we had to ask permission to go.\u00a0 Permission was granted with the understanding that you had to be home in time for supper.\u00a0 If you were late for supper, you not only missed out on the food, you did not sit at the table and join in on the conversation.\u00a0 The dinner table at both our homes was a place where things were shared and discussed.\u00a0 Topics like allowances, distributions of \u201cchores\u201d and what was going on in your life. If you didn\u2019t have a place at the table, your input and your interest was not heard, or considered.<\/span><\/p><div id=\"holaa-2656259962\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles-2\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesperformingarts.org\/whats-on\/series\/summerarts\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"HI-SummerSeries-300&#215;250-SP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HI-SummerSeries-300x250-SP.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p class=\"p1\">The dinner table is a great analogy for our participation as citizens in our communities.\u00a0 As we have talked about in past articles, the greatest responsibility and privilege we have is our vote. If you don\u2019t vote, you really lose your credibility to participate in the discussion at the dinner table in a bigger sense. You can complain about the state of affairs, but you really are not part of the discussion.\u00a0 Your vote is your voice. Your vote is personal, private and powerful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We are approaching midterm elections on November 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Traditionally midterm elections do not have big voter turnout because people think voting for President every four years is the important vote and that midterms really don\u2019t matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Midterm elections are very important.\u00a0 This is when we elect our Governor, US Senators, state legislators and other state officials and county boards and councils.\u00a0 All of these offices have a direct impact on each of us and our communities.\u00a0 This is when we elect people who will act on our needs and interests when laws are passed and when funds are allocated for our communities. \u00a0 A bigger voter turnout will result in a more accurate picture of what the people want.\u00a0 The vote also guides our elected officials as to how we want them to represent us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Iowa is always at the center of attention in every election year.\u00a0 News media and pollsters look to Iowa to see what the trends in the elections will be.\u00a0 They are watching Iowa closely in the approaching midterm elections.\u00a0 We, the people of Iowa, have the opportunity to really have a big voice with a big voter turnout and set the pace of the race for the direction our nation is going.\u00a0 The bigger the voter turnout, the more accurate a picture of what we want as citizens from our elected officials.\u00a0 They work for us and they need a wakeup call.<\/p><div id=\"holaa-3039436754\" class=\"holaa-ad-inside-articles\" style=\"margin-top: 2px;margin-bottom: 2px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><div class=\"holaa-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/hhs.iowa.gov\/health-prevention\/diabetes-prevention-management\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Diabetes Spanish 300&#215;250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/holaamericanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Diabetes-Spanish-300x250-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><br style=\"clear: both; display: block; float: none;\"\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Your Vote Counts IOWA!
