Come November 4 Maria Bribriesco from Bettendorf and Karyn Finn from Hudson hope to make history and become the first Latina\/s in the Iowa Legislature.<\/p>\n

Maria Bribriesco is candidate for the Iowa State Senate District 47<\/strong><\/p>

Maria Bribriesco is a retired lawyer for with the United States Army at the Arsenal.<\/p>\n

Born in south Texas, Maria traveled with her parents, who worked as migrant farm hands, following the harvest north each season. From an early age, she was engaged in civil rights issues for farm workers like her parents. Her experiences motivated her to go on to earn a law degree from the University of Iowa.<\/p>\n

\"\"She lives in Bettendorf, Iowa with her husband Bill Bribriesco and is the proud mother of Alejandro, Anthony and Andrew. Anthony and Andrew are both lawyers working on the family firm and Alejandro is a doctor.<\/p>\n

Bribriesco retired in 2011 after 27 years as an attorney with the United States Army at the Rock Island Arsenal.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m very proud of her,\u201d says her son Anthony. \u201cShe\u2019s doing all the hard work that needs to be done at this level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maria\u2019s husband Bill is quick to point out that if she wins, she would be the first Latina member of the Iowa legislature.<\/p>

\u201cShe has engaged in a grassroots campaign,\u201d says Mr. Bribriesco. \u201cI think it\u2019s encoded in her genes to be someone representing the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Bribriesco is right if she wins she could be the first latina in the Iowa legislature but she might not be the only one.<\/p>

Karyn Finn from Hudson, Iowa is running for the Iowa House of Representatives District 60, which includes parts of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Hudson and Black Hawk County.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Karyn Finn is involved in a host of organizations, including the Hudson Music & Athletic Boosters, Early Childhood Iowa Diversity Committee, National Program for Playground Safety, and the American Heart Association. She earned a degree in Physical Education from Tulane University, an Associate in the health care field from Kirkwood Community College and is currently finalizing a master\u2019s degree in Community Health Education at UNI.<\/p>

\"\"Finn and her husband, Kevin, have three children. Their oldest daughter, Juliann, attends Iowa State University and her other two children, Ryan and Carmen, attend Hudson High School.\u00a0 The family attends Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo.
Finn grew up in New Orleans and her grandparents immigrated from Mexico.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandfather came to this country in the 1930’s for a better life, became a US citizen and raised his children with a focus on getting a good education\u201d Finn mentioned. \u201cI would like to utilize my education and experience to be a role model not only for my kids but for other Latina\/os across the great state of Iowa\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Election Day November 4, 2014 could be a history making day in Iowa when the day is over there could be not only one but two Latinas in the Iowa State Government<\/p>\n
