Greater Iowa Credit Union works with schools throughout Iowa to select Latino high school students who wish to continue their education at an accredited college or university. The credit union will offer up to three $500 scholarships, one each to a student who identifies themselves as a Latino and plans to use their education to better their community.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The scholarship is named after Warren Morrow. Despite his Anglicized name, Warren Morrow was a true Latino. He was born in Mexico City to an American father and a Mexican mother and moved to Arizona to attend grade school. He attended Grinnell College in Iowa with every intention of becoming a doctor. Instead he became an activ\u00acist, working to ensure that the Latino community had equal access to dignified financial services. He founded Coopera Consulting Company in 2006 and worked diligently to help credit unions nationally work with the Latino community. When he died in 2012, the national credit union movement and the Latino community lost a strong advocate and a leader\u2019s voice. Greater Iowa is proud to continue Warren\u2019s legacy with the Warren Morrow Latino Educational Scholarship.<\/p>

Requirements: The scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate during the 2013-2014 academic year, who identifies themselves as a first or second-generation Latino.<\/p>\n

Eligible institutions:
Student must be enrolled full-time in an accredited not-for-profit two or four-year academic college or university, with students attending Iowa schools receiving special consideration. Excluded from the pro\u00acgram are for-profit institutions, vocational schools, online schools, non-accredited institutions.<\/p>\n

Timeline:
Applications are accepted between April 1, 2014, and August 15, 2014.<\/p>\n

Essay requirement:
Students will be asked to complete a 250-to-500-word essay, answering the question: How I plan to use my education to better my community.<\/p>

Funding:
Three $500 scholarships will be presented during the Latino Heritage Festival, scheduled for September 6 and 7 in Des Moines. A check will be deposited in your tuition account at the college of your choice.<\/p>\n
