Last month Young women had the opportunity to explore career possibilities in criminal justice or law enforcement as they participated in hands-on activities in Crime Time: STEM Camp for Girls.<\/p>\n

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) camp took place at Black Hawk College on June 11 to the 13th.<\/p>

“These are all non-traditional careers for women and they are all high wage and high growth careers that we want to introduce the girls to” said Jen Holldorf , STEM Camp Coordinator. “This year we had twenty girls that attended” she added.<\/p>\n

As a part of this year\u2019s camp, they explored the Putnam Museum and took part in the CSI Experience, visited the Scott County Jail and Courthouse, and toured the Scott County Dispatch Center.<\/p>\n

“They got to learn about fingerprinting, DNA, they got to see what a K-9 police officer does and they also got to learn a little self defense which is important for any woman to know” commented Holldorf.<\/p>\n

The camp was coordinated with the help of the University of Illinois Extension and QCCTEC. This event was 100% funded through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006.<\/p>\n
