Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America; and yet most insurance policies don\u2019t cover preventative screenings. About 1-in-2 Hispanic men and 1 in 3 Hispanic women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The lifetime probability of dying from cancer is 1 in 5 for Hispanic men and 1 in 6 for Hispanic women. Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics.<\/p>\n

Genesis Philanthropy in partnership with the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is offering a free way for patients to learn about their risk for lung cancer.<\/p>

“This is a tremendously big problem if they have a history of smoking,” says Sally Werner, Executive Director of Cancer Services, Genesis Health System.<\/p>\n

“There are a lot of individuals that meet barriers such as costs that prevents them from getting preventative services,” says Missy Gowey, Executive Director of Genesis Philanthropy.<\/p>\n

The new program offers free low dose CT scans to those who qualify as being at a high risk for lung cancer. The scan normally can cost around $300. Only those who are identified by the online survey as being at high risk for lung cancer will be eligible for a CT scan. Go to www.genesisphilanthropy.org\/knowyourrisk now to take the survey. “It\u2019s lifesaving,” Werner exclaims. “It\u2019s the simplest way to say it; it can save your life.”<\/p>\n

Maurice Beauregard is one of the first 20 people to take advantage of the free CT scans.\"\"<\/p>

“I smoked for about 30 years,” he says.<\/p>\n

His results were negative and he now is at peace and can breathe easier.<\/p>

“It was like phew,” he says. “It\u2019s unexplainable to know all those years I smoked doing damage to my body \u2013 but yet I\u2019ve been given a second chance on life.”<\/p>\n
