WEST DES MOINES, Iowa \u2013 Wednesday, April 23, 2014 \u2013 In the span of two weeks, soccer fans will have three chances to watch the Des Moines Menace at no cost. The free action starts this Sunday (April 27) in Iowa City, when the Menace battles for a regional title and a spot in the United States Adult Soccer Association\u2019s (USASA) national tournament. The Menace\u2019s schedule continues with back-to-back Saturday tilts at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.<\/p>\n

Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m.: Menace vs. Schwaben AC (Ill.)<\/strong><\/p>

Competition:<\/strong> The championship match of the USASA National Cups, Region II Tournament<\/p>\n

Venue:<\/strong> Iowa Soccer Complex (2665 Prairie Meadows Drive in Iowa City), grass field<\/p>\n

Details:<\/strong> Sunday\u2019s match concludes a regional tournament that opened last fall. By winning in the quarterfinals and semifinals in the eight-team tournament in November, the Menace and Schwaben AC secured berths in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. They\u2019re competing for more than a regional title: the winner also earns one of four spots in the 2013 Werner Fricker National Amateur Cup, set for late July in Salt Lake City.

The scrimmage, originally to take place on Drake\u2019s home stadium at Cownie, has been moved to an adjacent pitch, due to field conditions following the harsh winter.

Details:<\/strong> The reigning champion of the Des Moines International League, Imperio looks to knock off the Menace.
The Menace will soon learn its fate in the upcoming Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The United States Soccer Federation will announce the pairings by tonight. In its 101st year, the annual national tournament will have 80 teams \u2013 16 more than last year, when the Menace advanced to a third-round matchup with eventual Major League Soccer champion Sporting Kansas City (a 2-0 loss on May 28, 2013 at Sporting Park).
The first two rounds for the 2014 U.S. Open Cup are set for Wednesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 14.
Des Moines opens the Premier Development League season on Saturday, May 17 at Springfield (Mo.) and Sunday, May 25 at St. Louis. The Menace\u2019s first scheduled home action at Valley Stadium includes a May 31 exhibition with the Minnesota United FC Reserves, and a June 7 regular-season home opener with the Chicago Inferno, a PDL Heartland Division newcomer.<\/p>
