On Saturday November 2nd, 2103 Moline Public Library hosted a Lead Control open\u00a0house benefiting the Quad Cities Healthy Homes Coalition. Among the various<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>stations was a free lead screening for children between the ages of 6 months to five\u00a0<\/span>years of age as well as lead program applications and approval on site.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lead poisoning, the number one environmental illness affecting children, is caused\u00a0by lead based paint in older homes built before 1978. The most common exposer to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lead by children is through the ingestion of paint chips and contaminated dust from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>deteriorated or disturbed lead based paint in older homes.<\/span><\/p>

The City of East Moline is accepting applications for lead based paint hazard control\u00a0program as part of a grant from the department of housing and urban development.<\/span><\/p>\n

City Administrator Cole O’Donnell stated “The home has to be built before 1978. If\u00a0you have a child under the age of six who spends more than 200 hours a year in the\u00a0<\/span>house you should apply. It can be grandma’s house. You don\u2019t have to own the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>house it can be a rental unit. Arrangements can be made with location landlords to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>make all the necessary arrangements.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Qualified applicants receive free windows, doors, siding and exterior\/interior\u00a0painting. Applicants must meet income guidelines set by HUD., which Mr. O’Donnell<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>says can be found on the City of East Moline’s web site. Guidelines are based on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>household size (Total persons in the household) and total income.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. O’Donnell added that he believes the program benefits a wide range of people\u00a0and encourages the Latino community to apply.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
