Neutralize the stand-up game of Diaz and get the takedown. It’s textbook GSP but this fight was far from the normal main event fight. The first round was all St. Pierre as he secured a takedown early and it looked as though this would be a pretty one sided affair.

Advertisements

Round two looked a little better for Diaz as he was able to fire off a few shots but he was quickly put on his back again and it was all GSP until the end of the round. Round three went pretty much the same as the first two rounds but Diaz did begin to open up more, landing shots that cut St. Pierre towards the end the round. Diaz was able to stuff some takedowns in the fourth round but GSP poured it on landing swift jabs and Superman punches that wouldn’t allow Diaz to get anything going.

The fourth round also showcased some knees from both fighters but it would be the takedown from GSP yet again that would spoil any thoughts of Diaz pulling off a KO or TKO win. Diaz did quickly threaten with a kimura attempt but was unable to secure it. As the fifth round went down pretty much the same as all the other rounds, GSP was able to get the unanimous decision win over Diaz in front of his hometown fans, proving again that someone is going to have to figure out a way to stop his takedowns if they ever want to be king of the welterweight division.

In the co-main event, Johnny Hendricks (15-1) won a hard fought war with Carlos Condit (28-7) in a fight that was a perfect lead in to the GSP/Diaz bout. As Hendricks should have been the one in the main event fighting St. Pierre, he quickly went at Condit trying to land one of his patented left hand bombs, but Condit was able to stay away from it as he did what he does best countering with many different combinations. Hendricks was able to take down Condit throughout the fight but wasn’t able to keep him down. In the third round, Condit landed a huge right hand that sent Hendricks eyes in the back of his head but Hendricks was able to secure a couple more takedowns, and also the win over “The Natural Born Killer”. With the win over Condit, Hendricks asked for the next title shot versus GSP and I don’t know who else the UFC would see fit at this point giving it to other than Hendricks.

Nate Marquardt (35-12-2) was given a not so nice welcome back to the UFC from Jake Ellenberger (29-6) as “The Juggernaut” knocked out Marquardt in the first round. Chris Camozzi (19-5) won a split decision win over Nick Ring (13-2) and TUF 16 finalist and GSP training partner Mike Ricci (9-3) got his first win in the UFC taking the unanimous decision win over TUF Smashes finalist Colin Fletcher (9-3).

Advertisements

<br style="clear: both;
