together Latino and non Latino students their parents, educators and community leaders for a day of workshops dealing with some of the issues that Latino students face today, such as high school drop out rates, laws affecting undocumented students, Deferred Action, street gangs, attending college (financial aid, application for admission, career opportunities, area and state college) ) and the social, emotional, psychological, economic, political and educational challenges that a Latino adolescent experience as Latino student in U.S. public and private schools.<\/p>\n

The focus this year will be families and the role they play in their child\u2019s educational success.<\/p>\n

Black hawk College president will give the welcoming remarks followed by the Keynote speaker Marisa Rivera president of MPowerment Works, LLC.<\/p>\n

We will have a series of workshops on subjects like Financial Aid, Immigration laws & rights for undocumented students, Parent Involvement and how to choose a college, college planning and scholarships.<\/p>

Our purpose is to give Quad Cities area Latino students and parents the resources, support and opportunities to achieve personal, educational and professional success.<\/p>\n

We want attendees to leave with an understanding of some of the preparations they need to make to prepare for college.<\/p>

The Latino Youth Summit is free of charge and we strongly encourage the parents to accompany their child and we welcome community leaders and educators to participate.<\/p>\n

The event will take place once again at the gymnasium at Black Hawk College. Saturday October 6 from 9 AM to 3 PM.<\/p>
