One marcher, Jose Herrera, was arrested in a recent raid and is currently on bail. He has a court case pending to gain permanent residency. More importantly, he has a 7-year-old son.

“These raids don’t do any good,” he said. “They just separate families.”
The marchers proceeded from Our Lady of Mt. These have been on a much smaller scale than the Postville and Laurel, Miss. raids, arresting fifty to a hundred at most. However, the number and frequency of the raids has many towns across America concerned that their workers might be targeted next. According to a report from The Los Angeles Times, pro-immigration activists have organized networks to try and warn immigrants when their town might be targeted.

Advertisements

“These are huge paramilitary operations,” said Joshua Hoyt, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights director. “They use helicopters, Jeeps, mobile homes for processing people. Socorro Leos, a community organizer for the Mississippi Immigrants’ Rights Alliance, said “We cannot tell people, ‘Don’t go to work.’ And we can’t know for sure when or where ICE agents will show up. But we might be able to soften the blow.” In the long term, the “sanctuary movement” could be a greater service to families, if more and more are displaced by ICE raids. Now, as they did in the 1980s with refugees from political violence in Central America, more and more churches are offering safe haven to immigrants.

Advertisements

“The sanctuary movement is certainly an appropriate precedent,” David Cole, a law professor at Georgetown University, said. “Both [this movement, and the 80s movement] arose out of a sense that the immigration law and its enforcement are fundamentally unjust and illegitimate.”

Advertisements

►Marchers in Chicago Protest Immigration Raids A small but determined crowd of 200 turned out in Chicago’s west suburbs recently to protest the wave of ICE raids that have sparked […]

[42
["en","es
