Es parte de la donaci\u00f3n original del museo de C. A. La imagen es importante porque ayuda a redescubrir la cultura mexicana y transmite la sensaci\u00f3n de que la Virgen acompa\u00f1a a sus &#8220;hijos&#8221; e &#8220;hijas&#8221; en su viaje a un nuevo pa\u00eds. A principios del siglo XX, muchos inmigrantes mexicanos se trasladaron a Iowa e Illinois huyendo de la Revoluci\u00f3n Mexicana, en busca de una vida mejor para ellos y sus familias y para suplir la escasez de mano de obra provocada por la incorporaci\u00f3n de Estados Unidos a la Primera Guerra Mundial. Muchos inmigrantes latinos siguen confiando en su fe y devoci\u00f3n a Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe para superar los retos y dificultades que supone abandonar su pa\u00eds de origen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La historia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe cuenta que fue una aparici\u00f3n de la Virgen Mar\u00eda, madre de Dios, a un ind\u00edgena llamado Juan Diego. La primera aparici\u00f3n tuvo lugar el 9 de diciembre de 1531, cuando le habl\u00f3 en n\u00e1huatl, su lengua materna, y le pidi\u00f3 que construyera una iglesia en el lugar donde se hab\u00eda aparecido. El obispo local, Fray Juan de Zum\u00e1rraga, primer obispo de M\u00e9xico, le pidi\u00f3 una se\u00f1al milagrosa como prueba de su aparici\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Virgen dijo a Juan Diego que recogiera flores en pleno invierno y las colocara sobre su tilma antes de present\u00e1rselas al obispo. Ficke, 1925.159<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El cuadro representa ese momento, resaltando las diferencias entre Espa\u00f1a y los ind\u00edgenas de la \u00e9poca. El artista se asegur\u00f3 de que San Juan Diego tuviera rasgos ind\u00edgenas, a diferencia de otros cuadros de San Juan Diego pintados por artistas espa\u00f1oles, que lo representan con fuertes rasgos europeos. Los colores oscuros que rodean la imagen principal contrastan con los colores mucho m\u00e1s vivos de la Virgen de Guadalupe y se convierten en el centro de atenci\u00f3n. La corona de la Virgen de Guadalupe representa que es la reina de todo lo creado. La corona no est\u00e1 en la imagen original de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe, pero es un rasgo \u00fanico de esta pintura. Lo que hace que la imagen de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe sea tan distintiva en la pintura es que tiene una mezcla de rasgos espa\u00f1oles e ind\u00edgenas, mostrando un sentido de unidad entre ambas culturas.
