Vibrant colors. Proud dancers. Laughing children. Cultural Celebration. All of this could only describe the El Dia de Los Ninos/El Dia de Los Libros celebration at the Davenport library on April 28th. From 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. everyone was welcomed to come to the library to celebrate children and children’s literacy. Much to the children’s pleasure, a magician did a walk around performance 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. From 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. people could be seen craning their necks to catch a glimpse of Ballet Folklorico of the Quad Cities. The talented dancers in traditional Mexican dress captivated a large, fascinated audience in the children’s section of the library. Young and old enjoyed the talents of Los Macambos while having cake,
punch, and other refreshments, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Over five hundred people came to the event. Even the mayor came to say how happy he was to see a great, multicultural event. With crafts, whimsical maracas and flashy flowers, available the Davenport Library was prepared for the outstanding show up of over two hundred children. “It was a great event, a great turn out. We were really glad that so many people came. We got a lot of compliments from people of the Hispanic community and we were glad, because we were trying to cater to them. We added books in Spanish to our book collection and we’re going to add more books in other foreign languages.” said Steve Hart, who helped to coordinate the celebration. The event was an obvious success. If you were not able to come this time, hopefully you will come next year to the El Dia de Los Ninos/El Dia de Los Libros celebration at the Davenport Library.
