pelosiThe Democratic Party officially took over control of Congress on Thursday Jan. 4, 2007. The Democrats are hoping to pass legislation with Iraq being the main issue. Issues like the War in Iraq are the headlines as Incoming Ways and Means Committee Chair Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said last month that he plans to reintroduce legislation in the 110th Congress to reinstate the draft. The Democrats agenda in 2007 made immigration reform their ninth priority. The plan called the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act includes a road to legalization for undocumented workers that have been in the United States for a certain amount of time, lack previous criminal records, pay their taxes, and also propose to attack and eliminate the problem of crossing illegally and rationalize the arrival of legal immigrants.Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., became the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives as the Democrats won the House 233-202 over the Republicans. In the Senate, Democrats obtain a small majority of 51-49. With the margin in the senate being so small, both parties will need to work together for the benefit of the United States of America. The House and Senate as well as President Bush are hoping for a bipartisan majority in 2007. The major problem in any legislation being passed is that the 2008 presidential elections are right around the corner. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans want to be seen as letting the other side win. Partisan politics will become even more intense. Finally there will be politicians in both parties that will fear a position of support for comprehensive immigration reform in case it’s used against them in closely contested elections in 2008.
