University of Illinois Extension & 4-H invites youth ages 10 to 16 to explore different mapping methods and the innovative technology used to create maps in the new Mapping and GIS Club! The meetings will be held on Saturdays, April 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, from 3 – 4:30 p.m at WIU-QC Riverfront Hall, Room 118 in Moline, IL.
Youth will be able to “get in the field” using GPS units to collect REAL data that will be used to create a brand new map. They will also have the chance to learn GIS (Geographic Information Systems) basics, a computer program which allows us to layer maps and manipulate data to display new information. They will get to practice their cartography skills as they learn what makes a “good” map and appreciate how far technology has taken us!
To enroll, register online at University of Illinois Extension’s website http://web.extension.illinois.edu/hmrs/4hpyd and look for “4-H Mapping Special Interest Club” under Program Registrations on the 4-H positive youth development page. For those enrolling in 4-H for the first time this year (as of September 1, 2013) there will be a $20 program fee. Only youth ages 10 to 15 as of September 1 are eligible for the club. A supply fee of $5 will be changed to all youth enrolling in the club. For more information call (309) 756-9978. There is a limit of 15 youth, so register early to guarantee a spot.
